A Rock Solid Foundation from Kim Hanson Quilts

Good day everyone. Recently, I was directed to a website entitled, Her View from Home. Freelance writers like me were invited to write for them, on subjects including family, motherhood, parenting, relationships, faith and grief. My first submission was rejected… but my second submission was accepted. It’s entitled A Rock Solid Foundation.

You can read it here.

If you do read it, please consider leaving me a comment. As always, I’d love to hear from you all.

Thanks so very much.

Kim Hanson

How to get your Writing Published in Plants & Poetry Journal from Kim Hanson Quilts

Good day everyone. Thank you so very much for being here.

Recently, my story called a Great Grandmother’s Legacy was published in Plants & Poetry Journal. I’d never heard of that publication. Whilst on the lookout for somewhere appropriate to submit my story, I came across the Journal on a cruise through Submittable.com. There was an open call for submissions entitled, Plant People, An Anthology of Environmental Artists.

These words on the Journal’s site resonated with me:

We founded Plants & Poetry during a time of serious recovery and deep healing.

We discovered comfort and safety among our ...

Waiting a Very Long Time – Part 2 from Kim Hanson Quilts

I had a fictional story published in Cricket magazine called The Trapped and Tangled Loon. It was based on a true story and the backdrop was Police Outpost Lake in Waterton Lakes National Park. I have to say that I was pretty excited. . . maybe thrilled is a better word.

In between, I had two photos published in the Sunlight Press.

Chinook Sky near Cochrane, Alberta

This was a very pleasant surprise for me. Although the pay is miniscule, the reward is huge. It’s made me feel compelled to learn more about how my camera works, a red, old-ish Nikon ...

Waiting a Very Long Time – Part One from Kim Hanson Quilts

I’ve waited a very long time to be a writer. In grade eight, at Queen Elizabeth Junior High School, I had a story published in the school anthology. A week later, the vice-principal, Mr. Kelly, summoned me to his office. Given who I was at the time, I was terrified. He sat me down and asked me questions about what books I’d been reading.

“To Kill a Mockingbird,” I said. “In English Lit class”.

He folded his hands in front of him on the splintered, carved-up, wooden desk.

“Several teachers have remarked on your story. It’s very ...

Avoid the Chasm of Chaos from Kim Hanson Quilts

Good day everyone. At my tender age of 66, I still feel as if life can be filled with chaos. There are always appointments to attend, groceries to buy and people to see. I feel an urge sometimes to isolate – to concentrate only on writing or quilting or home improvements. After all, I am an introvert that truly enjoys spending time alone. . . I get energy from doing that.

But, I also realize the need to be out and about in the world; to be with my grandchildren, to see family and friends, to attend yoga classes, to spend time with ...

My Brand New, Beautiful Quilt Ladder from Kim Hanson Quilts

Good day all! Nice to have you here with me, as always.

Way back in April-ish of 2022, I began to search for a quilt stand of sorts that I could display my quilts on, outdoors. I wanted it fairly large, fairly tall actually, so that visually, it would take up the appropriate amount of space in photos.

Now, there are many types and kinds of quilt racks on the market. But they are all made in the same mold, and are maybe 40″ tall. I needed one much, much taller.

Closing my eyes, I had a visual in mind ...

Trapped and Tangled Loon from Kim Hanson Quilts

Good day everyone. It has been a very long, long time since my last post. I have been writing mainly, taking classes, taking photos, getting my garden growing, with some quilting on the side. Also, my Dad has been hospitalized yet again; I can’t remember if it’s been three times or four times during Covid. . . it’s been a lot for both him and for his family.

I was so excited to have my very first children’s story published in the American children’s magazine, Cricket. My story, “Trapped and Tangled Loon’ was included in their April ...

The Birth Place Forest of Silver Springs from Kim Hanson Quilts

Good day everyone. I wrote this piece for Woods Reader, a beautiful, inspiring publication based in Spring Lake, Minnesota. It can be found in their Winter 2020/2021 issue.

The grassy green field was alive with energy and vitality. School children, in groups of five or so, squealed with delight taking turns kicking the black and white soccer ball. Dogs barked; their owners allowing them freedom to run and play. The rush of four lanes of traffic roared by, leading in and out of the neighbourhood. Yet, the instant I stepped onto the spongy path of the Birth Place Forest ...

A Daily Ritual from Kim Hanson Quilts

Good day everyone. Thank you to all those amazing souls who continue to read my posts. I so appreciate you all taking the time to read my words and to leave your comments. I feel so blessed to have you all here.

While thinking about my son, Mike, the other day instead of feeling so sad, I thought of ways to make my days better.

I came up with three things. I call them my Daily Triple Agenda. (DTA for short).

First, I try to learn something new every day. If I can’t actually learn something new, then I ...

Death of a Dream? from Kim Hanson Quilts

As many of you know, I’ve longed for a backyard writing shed for years. I’ve had a recurring dream since my 30’s of a peaceful, tranquil, creative space, all my own.

I visualized a little cottage-type shed, with white shiplap on the peaked ceilings and gauzy curtains blowing in the gentle breeze. My magical space had a built-in bookcase on the back wall, a comfy chair and-a-half tucked into one corner and my desk positioned in the center. Funny thing was that the little shed stood in the middle of the woods, in a beautiful, green-grassed meadow ...

Chicken Soup anyone? from Kim Hanson Quilts

Good day. Last week, I heard the doorbell ring and sprinted to the front door. I cringed when my lighting-quick husband beat me to it. Peering over his shoulder, I watched him sign for a large, heavy box. My goal is to always be the first one to the front door. . . just in case the delivery is a giant box of fabric. My husband actually  thinks I have more than enough fabric already!

But this box was not fabric; it was way too heavy. Not being familiar with the return address, I ripped it open. Much to my surprise and ...
